Waterborne geophysical techniques for the characterization of bottom sediments in lakes and rivers.

Brief description: The research is carried out in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino. The research aims at evaluating the application, in different aquatic contexts, of waterborne geophysical techniques (magnetic, electromagnetic and electrical) from an onboard boat for the characterization of submerged sediment of natural basins and irrigation channels both for characterization studies and for the assessment of the risk of infiltration and seepage. The implementation of the research with the use of seismic techniques is also under evaluation . The waterborne geophysical techniques are a useful tool for a correct characterization of the bottom sediments in a spatially distributed manner overcoming the inherent limitations of direct surveys and sampling in the same contexts. The research results have led to the correct identification of the bottom features of natural lakes in different contexts and identification of potential earliest signs of seepage from irrigation canals .
