Activity

Speleothems are natural archives, and they can provide unique information about the past geomagnetic field and its relationship to paleoenvironment. They offer continuous, precisely dated and high-resolution magnetic records that contribute to the investigation of the fine-scale temporal evolution of sub-millennial to centennial geomagnetic events (Fig. 1 – flowstone of the Rio Martino Cave, Northern Alps) as well as to the identification of long-term variations such as magnetic reversals.
Speleothem magnetism studies the origin, relative concentration and grain-size of the magnetic minerals incorporated in the speleothems during their formation, tracking the environmental processes and the past environmental conditions that affect the sediment-magnetic record. Such natural archives have the potential of yielding high resolution reconstructions of regional and local climatic and pedogenetic histories. The magnetic record, moreover, can be directly compared to temperature and precipitation reconstructions based on isotopic and trace elements compositions from the same specimens.
