Activity

Active orogenic belts (such as the Himalaya, the Alps and the Appennines) are able to produce significant amounts of CO2, similar to those measured at surface in volcanic systems. However, the processes controlling the production, transfer, fixation and outgassing of these carbon-bearing fluids from the Earth’s crust to the surface are still poorly understood. This research aims at investigating the processes of carbon production, transfer, fixation and outgassing in different active collisional settings, and correlate the estimated carbon fluxes with those measured at surface from springs and/or gaseous discharges. The study focuses on two different orogenic belts: the “small and cold” Alpine orogen and the “large and hot” Himalayan orogen.
